ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN / INSPECTOR
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Works in the Public Works Department as an hourly employee. Inspects: proposed sub-divisions, public improvements, street openings, and driveways. Performs engineering functions such as computer aided drafting, estimating, plan review, basic surveying, specifications writing and other duties as required within the Department of Public Works. May be Wetlands Enforcement Officer.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general direction of the Public Works Director who reviews the work performed to assure that the quality is maintained.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: May supervise non-technical support staff in performance of listed duties.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Inspects new construction and repairs included but not limited to paving, grading, erosion control, concrete, signing, sight-lines, soil and slope stabilization, drainage, sewer, water, bridges, buildings and other public projects. Is responsible for keeping written and computerized inspection records of all projects. General computer aided drafting, technical writing and basic engineering, including assisting the Department of Public Works in surveying. Will enforce all Public Works ordinances with the assistance of the Public Works Director. May be required to attend commission meetings as a representative of Public Works.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY: Understanding of surveying, drainage and construction by either basic education or through Public Works construction experience. Must possess excellent written and oral communications skills to deal effectively with other employees and the public. Must successfully complete a competitive written examination to be administered by the Public Works Director.
MINIMUM DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school and a minimum of 2 years of either continuing education in an engineering related field or Public Works related experience including but not limited to inspection, report preparation and computer use. Must possess a valid State of Connecticut Driver’s License. The desirable candidate will possess a Civil Engineering Degree from an accredited college, and an Engineer in Training Certificate. Successful candidates will be ranked by a combined written exam and oral interview.
