Candace Hall, whose graduate research has focused on Clara Barton and Dorence Atwater and their life long friendship, will be the speaker.
While researching Clara Barton, Ms. Hall learned of the meeting between Clara Barton and Dorence Atwater that changed his life. Together, they fought to make the Andersonville Death List public, this information bringing closure to the thousands of family members and friends of these dead soldiers.
When Atwater was court martialed and sentenced to prison. Clara Barton agitated and advocated on his behalf. Fearing prison would prove a death sentence to the physically debilitated Atwater, Barton convinced members of Congress and other well-known persons for his release.
